Stone Soup is one of my favorite children’s stories.
You may remember it is about the three soldiers returning from a war. They were hungry and weary so they entered a town and requested some food to eat. The continual response from the townspeople was “No, we don’t have anything.”
One soldier asked if he could borrow a large pot so he could make stone soup. Water fills the pot and is placed over a fire. Another soldier placed a stone in the pot and they waited.
The curious townspeople are intrigued about the soup and the possibilities. Slowly different people decided that they had something to contribute. Someone brought carrots, another potatoes, and still another a dash of salt and pepper. The fragrance filled the air as people looked on with anticipation about the wonderful stone soup.
Together the community brought bowls and spoons and they enjoyed a delicious meal. The soldiers eventually went on their way. But the neighborhood was never quite the same.
Connections – As we dream together, commit together, share our resources together, Emmanuel will never be the same again.
