The Emmanuel Gospel Choir will present a concert in the sanctuary of Emmanuel Baptist Church, 430 Jackson Street in Alexandria, on Sunday, April 26, at 6:00 p.m. The concert is free of charge and open to the public.

The choir was founded fifteen years ago by American opera singer Cecelia Stearman and American pianist Scott Sontag. Now made up of 80 members, the choir is led by Sarah Jeanmaire, director, and Scott Sontag, pianist.

Begun as an outreach of Emmanuel International Church (Rueil-Malmaison, suburb of Paris, France), the Emmanuel Gospel Choir’s goal is to share the Gospel, which means “Evangel: the Good News of Jesus Christ, the love of God offered to all.”

The Emmanuel Gospel Choir has recorded five CD’s and has toured in Italy, Switzerland and England.

The Alexandria concert on April 26 will be part of the choir’s first tour to the United States, realizing a long-time dream of the choir’s co-founder and pianist, Scott Sontag, who is a native of Pineville.

During this tour, the choir will sing concerts in St. Louis, MO, Memphis, TN, and Alexandria, Covington and New Orleans in LA, following the path of the Mississippi River.

The concert will include traditional and modern gospel songs and spirituals plus a number of gospel songs written by the choir’s director, pianist and guitarist.

There will be approximately 45 singers and 4 musicians on the tour. The majority of the members are French, along with several anglophiles. The group includes Christians and non-Christians. Of the Christians, some are Catholic and some Protestant of various denominations.
